Buying shares for the first time?

Buying shares for the first time?

Got your first paycheck and can't wait to buy your first lot of shares?

Hold on!

Before you start investing in the stock market, you have to get certain basics in place.

Follow this checklist to ensure you are on track.

1. Get a broker

People like you and me cannot just go to a stock exchange and buy and sell shares.Only the members of the stock exchange can. These members are called brokers and they buy and sell shares on our behalf.

So, if you want to start investing in shares, you can do it only through a broker.

Every stockbroker has to be registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India, which is the stock market regulator.

You can either choose a broker (who is directly registered with SEBI) or a sub-broker (people licensed by brokers to work under them).

The Bombay Stock Exchange directory or the National Stock Exchange Web site will give you a list of brokers affiliated to them. Most of them entertain retail clients.

If you want an online broker, you can start by looking at the Web sites of some well-known online players: Sharekhan, Kotak Securities, ICICI Direct, 5paise and India Bulls.

  • How to sell shares at the right time

2. Get a demat account

Gone are the days when shares were held as physical certificates.

Today, they are held in an electronic form in demat accounts.

Demat refers to a dematerialised account.

Let's say your portfolio of shares looks like this: 40 shares of Infosys [Get Quote], 25 of Wipro [Get Quote], 45 of HLL [Get Quote] and 100 of ACC.

They will show in your demat account. You don't have to possess any physical certificates showing you own these shares. They are all held electronically in your account.

Periodically, you will get a demat statement telling you what shares you have in your demat account.

How to get a demat account

To get a demat account, you will have to approach a Depository Participant.

A depository is a place where an investor's stocks are held in electronic form.

There are only two depositories in India -- the National Securities Depository Ltd and the Central Depository Services Ltd.

The depository has agents who are called Depository Participants. In India, there are over a hundred DPs.

Think of it like a bank. The head office, where all the technology rests and the details of all the accounts are held, is like the depository. The DPs are like the branches of banks that cater to individuals.

A broker, however, is not similar to a DP. A broker is a member of the stock exchange and he buys and sells shares for his clients and for himself. A DP, on the other hand, gives you an account where you can hold those shares.

To get a list of the registered DPs, visit the NSDL and CDSL Web sites.

3. Get a PAN

The taxman demands that you get yourself a Permanent Account Number.

This is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric number (AABPS1205E, for example) that identifies and tracks an individual in the taxman's database.

Almost every money transaction demands the use of a PAN. These include:

~ When you get a job

~ When you file an income tax return

~ When you open a bank account

~ When you deposit cash of Rs 50,000 or more in a bank

~ When you open a bank fixed deposit of Rs 50,000 or more

~ When you open a post office deposit of Rs 50,000 or more

~ When you buy/ sell shares and mutual funds

~ When you buy/ sell property

~ When you buy a vehicle

~ When you take a loan: home/ personal/ other

~ When you install a telephone (or buy a cell phone)

~ When you pay in cash to hotels and restaurants against bills for an amount exceeding Rs 25,000 at a time

~ You also need to mention it in every transaction you have with the tax officials.

If you are going through a tax consultant, you need not worry. He will supply you with Form 49A (the application form for the PAN number) and give you a list of the documents he needs.

However, if you believe in doing things on your own, the process is really not that tedious.

You could visit the official Web sites of the Income Tax department or UTI Investor Services Ltd or National Securities Depository Limited.

Download Form 49A from any of these sites and follow the instructions.

You should get your PAN in the form of a laminated card within a month.

4. Check if you need a UIN

This depends on how much you plan to invest.

The Unique Identification Number is the identification an investor needs to buy and sell shares or mutual fund units.

It is part of the Security and Exchange Board of India's attempt to create a database of all Market Participants and Investors, called MAPIN.

Who needs a UIN?

An investor who is involved in a single transaction of Rs 1,00,000 or more will have to quote his/ her UIN.

If you plan to be a prominent stock market player or a mutual fund investor and expect to deal with such huge amounts in the near future, you should get a UIN.

SEBI has appointed the National Securities Depositories Ltd that, in turn, has appointed Points Of Service agents. The NSDL Web site has a list of the POS agents.

Visit the office of a POS agent. Make sure you take an appointment before you go. As part of the application process, your fingerprints will be scanned and a photograph taken.

All you have to do is fill and submit an application form (there are separate forms for corporates and individuals). You can also download the form for an individual at the NSDL Web site.

Incidentally, the UIN is totally different from a PAN. The Permanent Account Number is an identification number for filing your income tax returns.

Using "Automated Trading Robots" or "Expert Advisors" or simply "EA", is easily done on the Metatrader 4 platform, but did you know you can have multiple expert advisors running at the same time on one platform?

For purposes of this article, I will use the forex Metatrader trading platform as an example, since it is a very user-friendly platform and can easily run expert advisors.

Assuming you have already opened a live Metatrader trading account with your preferred Forex Broker, go to the file menu in the top left corner to open a new chart. Click on "New Chart" and then choose the currency pair you wish to trade. You can also simply click on the Chart icon in the top left corner of the screen to save yourself an extra step. The chart will be shown in one of the tabs below, as the line in red indicates at the bottom of the screen on Exhibit "A". Follow the same steps to open your second chart, if you wish to trade the same currency pair with another EA. You must do this if you are to trade multiple EA's on the same currency pair, since you will not be able to trade multiple EA's on one chart.

Exhibit A

If you already had your first chart with the correct currency pair in the first tab, once the second chart is created, it will automatically go to the last tab of any other charts already there.

For convenience, you can move the chart you just created closer to your first chart, so you can easily toggle between the two charts. Click and hold on the chart you just created, then drag and drop on the tab next to your first chart and it will replace whatever chart was there. You can see in Exhibit "B" below that we have moved the second EUR/USD M15 chart next to the first one. Alternatively, you can minimize your chart and view them all on one screen, as shown below.

Exhibit B

Make sure the chart you want is identified on your screen, as indicated in Exhibit "C". You must choose the correct time frame at the top of your screen. You can see how the time frame can be adjusted by clicking on the different tabs, "M" for minutes, "H" for hours, "D" for days, "W" for weeks and "MN" for months. In this example, we have indicated a chart for EUR/USD on the "M15" or 15 minute time frame.

Exhibit C

If you have already downloaded your expert advisor, you are ready to begin the process of running it on the software in your own account. Begin by clicking on the (+) sign of the "Expert Advisor" tab under the "Navigator" section within Metatrader, as shown in Exhibit "D" below. Once the Expert Advisor tab expands, you should see the name of your newly downloaded expert advisor. If it is not there, try installing it again by following the instructions provided by your EA Developer.

Exhibit D

To start using your expert advisor, click and hold on the appropriate EA on the left hand side in the Navigator screen, then drag and drop the EA onto your chart. See Exhibit "E" below.

Exhibit E

Once you have dropped the EA onto your chart, a popup screen will be shown. Under the "Common" tab, you need to make sure that the "Allow live trading" box is checked, as well as the "Allow DLL imports" box in order for your EA to work properly. See Exhibit "F" below.

Exhibit F

Then click on the Inputs tab. You will need to verify that the "Value" settings are in accordance with the EA you are running. You should carefully read the instruction manual for the optimum settings given by the product developer.

IMPORTANT NOTE! You will want to make sure that the MagicNumber of one EA is different from the other. Otherwise, you may have a conflict when the EA's are trading multiple positions. They may not be able to differentiate one order from another. You can randomly assign a number of your choosing as well, by double clicking on the Value box. If the particular EA's you are using do not have a MagicNumber field, you will either need to write in the code or have someone do it for you. Another option is to put something in the comments section of the account history to help you differentiate, but that is only a temporary solution. Once you have verified the settings, click "Okay". See Exhibit "G" below.

Exhibit G

If you have checked the right settings and inputted the correct values, you will see the name of the EA and a happy face "J" in the top right corner of your screen. If you have not entered the information and values properly, you will see a sad face "L" instead. If you believe that the parameters have been set properly, make sure that your "Expert Advisors" tab at the top of the screen is clicked on. You should see a green arrow in the box. See Exhibit "H" below.

Exhibit H

Once the first chart is set up, you can go to the next chart by clicking on the correct tab at the bottom of the screen and going through the same process to properly install the next EA. You can do this on as many charts as you like with as many EA's as you like, but I would not recommend more than three EA's running at once. See Exhibit "I" below.

Exhibit I

Once you have properly installed your EA's on the different charts, you will want to verify that all of the information is correct and then you can just sit back and watch the EA's go! This one already made a trade, as indicated in the middle of the screen below on Exhibit "J".

Exhibit J

Should you have any questions about the performance, bandwidth or parameters of your expert advisor, you should consult your EA product developer.

Tips to get smarter, better at work

Tips to get smarter, better at work

Here are some simple and effective tips that could enhance your career to a greater extent.
Tips to get smarter, better at work
1. Effective communication forms the foundation for a positive work alliance. You need to be able to tell your potential ally what you need and listen deeply to what they need.
2. Treat your allies as equals. No matter their position within your organization, all people are equal; they just have different jobs. Believe this.
3. Exhibit total professionalism. Never participate in gossip or in discussing the business of coworkers behind their backs.
4. Make sure you are not forming an exclusive club that the rest of your organization will fear and resent. But, you must take the time to develop strong relationships with your allies.
5. When working on a project together, always put forth your best efforts. Be the person who is willing to do extra to strengthen the collaboration and the outcome or product.
6. Keep your promises. If you say you will do something, do it. People need to depend upon you and the deadlines to which you commit.
7. Resolve any conflicts or disputes at your earliest opportunity. Unresolved conflict festers just under the surface in organizations.
8. Be an ally. Support your colleague’s ability to accomplish his or her mission, too. Give credit for ideas and solutions.
9. Effective managers delegate and don’t micromanage. Prioritize your tasks to focus on the important ones.
10. Your workspace should keep you motivated, not provide hot spots for daydreaming. Dress up your desk with items that keep you focused.
11. Too much to do at work? Add another task to your list: take a vacation and relax. People can’t operate at full throttle on the job day after day.
12. It’s a fact that taking breaks will increase productivity. It’s been proven in studies. If you need to, find someone to help ensure you take a morning and afternoon break.
13. Establish a routine of planning your week and your day. This will allow you to have your most productive week all the time.
14. Delegate or delete the non-essential items from your to-do list. The best way to do this is to always do your most important things first.
15. Make sure you plan in enough time between activities and appointments, and find ways to fail proof being on time.
16. Choose to enjoy your time at work. Find others who are like this and spread good cheer. It’s contagious and it grows.
17. Deadlines, tough bosses, rude clients, slow computers. Don’t make them into large dramas. Don’t lament the challenges of the world.
18. Try doing something different. If you always go on a trip, try taking a more local vacation, and really get some good rest time.
19. When you complain or fight on everything, then your power to ask for things is diminished. Save it up for when you really need it.
20. Don’t wait for your company to tell you what to do. Think creatively about how you can work with others to generate a greater result than if you had each worked on this alone.
21. If you are asked a question that stumps you or surprises you, never feel like you have to answer it right away. Seek more time to think about or research your answer.
22. Don’t immediately reject critiques from others, even if you don’t like or respect them. Sometimes people you don’t like may be giving you more honest feedback.
23. Be open to change. Give it a chance. Adapt to new things while using your experience to guide you, and you will have great success.
24. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to learn and improve your skills. Look for good seminars and training.
25. Set up a routine for “busy days” - perhaps you work 2-4 extra hours, and stick to that schedule, working nothing beyond it.
26. Schedule things like “break”, “coffee”, or even “video games” into your calendar just like you would a conference call.
27. There is a time and a place for perfectionism - when things are busy, consciously choose the areas in which you are willing to slack.
28. Whether it be business or personal support, busy times call for a morale boost on a regular basis. Hire a temp virtual assistant or call a good friend.
29. Everyone has a few things that are guaranteed to bring your stress level down to normal. Know your ‘relax buttons’ and get them on your schedule now.
30. For many people, a computer is the central tool at work. Optimizing the energy settings for computers and other devices can be more than a modest energy saver.

Top seven ways to get in shape

Top seven ways to get in shape

Top seven ways to get in shape
You can easily get in shape while simultaneously preventing the environment by making certain lifestyle changes in the newyear, suggests a report.

According to the Environmental News Network, the report contains seven suggestions for achieving this end.

One of them is quitting the gym and stopping driving to reach the health club. The reason cited for this is that a majority of people usually stop exercising after a month of two because they do not find it to be fun.

The recommends that people instead try getting outside on foot rather than driving to the gym, as that will help reduce the consumption of fuel and electricity.

Avoidance of buying home exercise equipment is the second suggestion, with the CDC report saying that 40 per cent of such equipment are not used. The report says that people should instead save their money for other things, and keep their carbon footprint low by exercising outside.

The third suggestion is that people better use their legs and get some cardio if their trip is less than a five-minute drive.

Planting trees is the fourth recommendation on the list, with the report suggesting that being outdoors would give people a good workout, and they will create more oxygen for Mother Earth.

Fifthly, the report recommends joining the composting club, as activities like dirt-digging and garbage-clearing not only help the environment but build muscles also.

The use of electric bikes, also known as optibikes, finds a mention on the sixth place. Such bikes are fastest ways to get fit and lower the amount of pollution.

Finally, the report recommends “starting a ride to work club”. All that this phrase means is that the members of a club should collectively decide whether they would like to ride their bikes to work, or go the old-fashioned route of carpooling.

Samsung M7500 Emporio Armani review: Own the night

Samsung M7500 Emporio Armani review: Own the night

Samsung and Armani do it again and the GSMArena fashion column is back in business. It's a whole new dress code this time, as the Samsung M7500 Emporio Armani leaves the tux in the closet and goes clubbing. And if a name that opens doors is not enough, the Emporio Armani phone by Samsung claims to have an ear for music. We guess there's no doubt though, its No 1 job is to get you noticed. Aptly dubbed Night Effect, the M7500 Emporio Armani just loves it when it's dark. So, someone please hit the lights.

Each time a fashion brand enters the mobile phone market controversy is inevitable. The haute couture label certainly justifies the asking price but will the handset get away with gaps in the spec sheet.

Official photos of Samsung M7500 Emporio Armani

The Samsung M7500 Emporio Armani is a stylish handset with a distinct focus on music. The flashing light effects, the dedicated music keys plus the 3.5mm jack and the slightly redone music player application are a reason enough for music lovers to check it out before purchasing their next handset. The distinct music slant is also quite in line with the handset's obvious refusal to compete for a top slot in the fashion phone segment.

Key Features:

  • Quad-band GSM and 3G with HSDPA support
  • 2.2" 256K-color OLED display of QVGA resolution
  • 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with smile shot
  • Emporio Armani branding
  • Light effects
  • 120MB of internal memory and microSD memory card slot (verified to work with 16GB cards)
  • 3.5mm standard audio jack
  • Dedicated music keys
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth (with A2DP) and USB v2.0
  • Multi-tasking support and a convenient shortcut bar on the homescreen
  • Office document viewer
  • ShoZu integration
  • Smart dial

Main disadvantages:

  • Hefty price tag
  • QCIF video recording
  • No camera flash
  • No accelerometer, so no fancy music controls or screen rotation
  • Smallish display for the price range
  • Task Manager is assigned to the camera key

Slumdog Millionaire Movie Review

'Slumdog Millionaire' is every inch a Danny Boyle film.

'Slumdog Millionaire': Mast-watch!

'Slumdog Millionaire': Mast-watch!

Slumdog Millionaire Review
Hope within squalor, humour within violence - they’re all thematic trademarks of the British director of druggie drama 'Trainspotting' and zombie saga '28 Days Later'. This time, Boyle takes his wildly high-energy visual aesthetic and applies it to a story that, at its core, is rather sweet and traditionally crowd-pleasing.
Unassuming Dev Patel stars as slumdog underdog Jamal, an 18-year-old who comes from nothing but is on the verge of winning more money than anyone has ever won before on the Indian version of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'. The game show’s host (ideally smarmy and egotistical Anil Kapoor) grows unshakably suspicious as Jamal prepares to face one last question for the top prize of 20 million rupees and has him hauled in for police questioning (by ever-imposing Irrfan Khan).
Simon Beaufoy’s complex script, based loosely on Vikas Swarup’s novel 'Q&A', glides effortlessly among Jamal’s interrogation, his unlikely success in the television hot seat and his rough-and-tumble upbringing that provided the life lessons serving him so well now.
Jamal reflects upon the desperate times he shared with his older brother Salim (Madhur Mittal), after their mother was killed in a savage anti-Muslim attack. He remembers the cruelty of the Fagin-like figure who forced them and other orphans into slavery. And he recalls fondly the time he spent with Latika (stunning former model Freida Pinto), his first love who, as a scared child, became the brothers’ third Musketeer. (Loveleen Tandan, who cast the film - including the three sets of actors who play the main characters at various ages - did so much behind-the-scenes work, she gets a co-director credit.)
Maybe it’s a bit too clever that every question in the game show happens to have some connection to Jamal’s vividly Dickensian life, from his encounter with a blind child to the unfortunate reason he knows what a Colt .45 is. But that’s the point: witnessing the uplift of the charmed new life Jamal can now call his own.

Download Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire' won’t let him forget where he came from, though. Mad dashes through Bombay’s most cramped corners provide a dizzy thrill with their off-kilter camera angles, despite the dismal scenery (in that regard the film shares an inescapable bond with Fernando Meirelles’ equally unflinching 'City of God'). Occasionally, though, Boyle will take a moment to catch his breath - and let us catch ours - as he does in a striking overhead shot of the patchwork of tin roofs under which these children make their homes.
The cinematography from Anthony Dod Mantle (who shot '28 Days Later') gives even the most depressing images an unexpected beauty, with Chris Dickens’ expert editing keeping the considerable action moving fluidly.
Then, in the third act, 'Slumdog Millionaire' takes a conventional turn when everything until then had felt so fresh and new. The mob bosses who rule Bombay, and with whom arrogant Salim has aligned himself, are depicted as snarling caricatures. And the relationship between Jamal and Latika, delicate as it is, reveals them to be little more than a familiar pair of star-crossed lovers trying to find their way back to each other. Nevertheless, realism permeates even that aspect of the film: She’s pragmatic, he’s romantic.
The ending is a joy, though, so make sure you stick around for it. After all the heavy, emotionally wrenching material that precedes it for two hours, it’s the perfect final answer

Delhi-6 Music Review

Rahman hits the bull's eye with 'Delhi-6'

Delhi-6 is a forthcoming Bollywood film to be directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra that will star Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, and Divya Dutta. The movie is reportedly based on Mehra's growing up years in Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi. The film will be Mehra's third directorial venture after critically acclaimed Aks and the immensely successful Rang De Basanti, which was India's official entry to the Oscars.

Music Review

"Tumre Bhavan Mein" adds a touch of spirituality to the album. Short and soothing, the song that offers prayers, is very melodious. "Tumre Bhavan Mein" is backed by vocals from Rekha Bharadwaj, Kishori Gowariker, Shraddha Pandit and Sujata Majumdar.

Not many composers explore qawwali these days, but Rahman did that seamlessly with "Arziyan". Tabla, harmonium and the clapping sounds, supported by meaningful lyrics - all create a mesmerising listening experience. The Sufism-imbued notes of the song and its requisite poignancy are backed flawlessly by the two singers - Javed Ali and Kailash Kher.

Rahman has packed in a surprise in the form of "Bhor Bhaye" - it delves into Indian classical form and is a treat. With Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's rousing rendition and Shreya Ghoshal's honeyed voice, "Bhor bhaye" is an overwhelming experience, especially for those who crave for classics.

Next song, "Delhi-6", pays a tribute to the city. The funky song is contemporary from the word go and blends a dash of rock, rap and hip-hop. "Delhi-6", which is a ragged mélange of attitude and style, is sure to be hummed by every youngster. Benny Dayal, Vivienne Pocha, Blaze, Tanvi and Claire have crooned it.

With "Dil gira dafatan", Prasoon Joshi reaffirms what a good lyricist he is. To add to that, the melody and the simplistic arrangement of instruments are extremely soothing to the ear. Ash King is the lead singer while Chinmayee's backing creates some spell-binding moments.

"Genda phool", sung by Rekha Bharadwaj, Shraddha Pandit and Sujata Majumdar, is a teasing folk song. It starts as a purely rustic and rooted number, but soon western arrangements take over. Composer Rajat Dholakia and Rahman share the credit for the song, which is quite playful.

"Hey kaala bandar" is easily the poorest track in the album. The number in the hip-hop genre, with a few English lyrics, fails to create a mark. The song is sung by Karthik, Naresh, Srinivas and Bony Chakravarthy.

"Masakalli" is easily the best song on the soundtrack. A power packed and expressive number, it is crooned by Mohit Chauhan. A free flowing, addictive, fun number, "Masakalli" will be remembered for months to come owing to its mirthful, fluttering mood.

"Noor" is a small couplet recited by Amitabh Bachchan.

"Rehna tu" is meant to be a smoothly flowing, romantic number. But in spite of Rahman lending his voice to the song and Benny Dayal along with Tanvi doing well with backing vocals, the song doesn't really captivate.

Overall, the album is a robust mix of impressive tracks with some great and hummable lyrics, making it a sure hit among music lovers.

Raaz Movie Censored Scene : Kangana's hot scene

Kangana Ranaut's hot scene in Raaz Movie Censored

Censor Board objects to Kangana's nude scene; gives Raaz - The Mystery Continues an A certificate. But producer Mukesh Bhatt believes he will be able to retain the scene

Mukesh Bhatt's dream of retaining Kangana Ranaut's nude scene in Raaz- The Mystery Continues has come to naught. The Censor Board Committee which saw the film last night has ordered the nude scene to be deleted if Mukesh wants the film to see the light of day.

Also, Raaz has been given an A certificate. However, Mukesh has the option of approaching the Revising Committee of The Censor Board.
In this scene Kangana is attacked by the ghost for the first time. According to our sources Mukesh Bhatt, who was present at the screening, was livid with the Censors' decision. There was a big argument between Mukesh and some members of the Board who refused to cow down.

Mumbai Mirror had learnt about the scene nearly15 days back and asked Mukesh for a picture. But Mukesh had said, "I don't want to release the picture as then I may have more difficulty in getting a U certificate for this film. I want a
bigger audience for the film" We told him that irrespective of whether he gave us the picture or not, the censors would do their job anyway. But Mukesh did not part with the picture.

http://o.aolcdn.com/feedgallery/india/i/b/bhatt_girls/05_bhatts_girls_3005_430xx.jpg

We tried to persuade Kangana to get us the picture, but even she was apprehensive about releasing the picture to the media.

Vinayak Azad (Regional Officer, Censor Board) confirmed on Friday evening that his panel has ordered Vishesh Films to delete Kangana's nude scene. He said, "My officers have told me that they had told Vishesh films to delete the nude scene. De
spite the deletion of the scene, the film will have an A certificate since there is a lot of horror content in it."

Our source clarified, "Obviously, Kangana did not shoot in the nude and she wore a body suit to create an illusion. But the Censors' objection is valid since the viewer will definitely feel that Kangana is nude in the scene."
Funnily, Mukesh Bhatt is still living in denial. After we spoke to Vinayak Azad, he told us, "Raaz - The Mystery Continues has got a UA certificate. We have not been asked to delete Kangana's nude scene."

Movie Reviews:

a movie review by: Linda Cook

I had to give this movie two ratings. One of the scenes is simply briliant. The rest%u2026isn't.

2 stars for most of the movie, except for one scene

If you've seen Jim Carrey in "Liar Liar," then you've pretty much seen Jim Carrey in "Yes Man."

In the 1997 movie, he played a guy who had to tell the truth all the time. Here he plays a guy who has to say "yes" all the time.

Carrey's Carl is a loan executive who has spent years saying "no." The love of his life dumped him, and he's been wallowing in isolation ever since. He turns down loans and party invitations with the same tone.

Then he meets an old friend who encourages him to attend a "Say Yes!" , where the guru of yes is played by Terence Stamp. Stamp tells his followers to take risks by saying "Yes" to every opportunity.

Carl ends up giving a homeless man a ride, full use of his telephone and all his money, all because the man asked for them. As Carl makes his way home from this encounter, he runs out of gas, and meets a pretty girl named Allison (Zooey Deschanel), who offers him a ride back to his car on her scooter. Carl says "yes" to everything Allison asks him.

In a tasteless and unnecessary scene, Carl also says "yes" to his elderly neighbor's advances (Fionnula Flanagan), to Korean lessons and every invitation he receives. He also, naturally, runs into his ex, who is astonished at this newly vibrant Carl.

Carrey remains one of my favorite actors %u2013 a guy who just hasn't received the kudos he deserves for being a true performer and not just one of those "funny guys." Carrey certainly does all he can to keep this average script afloat.

This is based on a real-life biography in which author Danny Wallace really did answer "yes" to questions and invitations. I wish it had been a instead.

3 ½ stars for about four minutes of the movie

Now, here's a gem of entertainment: Good-natured comedy based ona suicide.

I know, I know, it sounds terrible. But with Jim Carrey as the clever rescuer, Luis Guzman as the would-be jumper, and a song by Third Eye Blind, this is funny and heartfelt stuff.

No, I won't ruin it for you by telling you about it. It's a little island of wit in a so-so screenplay.

With five well-appointed trims, the all-new Corolla delivers satisfying affordability.

  • Excellent outward visibility
  • Powerful yet quiet 2.4-liter engine
  • Fit and finish
  • Available navigation system
Cons:
  • Only XRS gets rear disc brakes
  • No coupe offered

The Corolla was Toyota's trailblazer when it led the then-fledgling carmaker to the shores of America in 1968. In an era of Detroit muscle, the economy-minded Corolla secured a beachhead for Toyota. Now in its 40th year on Toyota's roster, the all-new 2009 model is the 10th generation of the pioneering Corolla. The formula that gave it its staying power in the '60s, namely reliability, efficiency, comfort and affordability, is alive and well in the 21st century.

Tenth-Gen Updates
The new Corolla is the first to shed the "entry level" badge, since it's now a middle step between the Yaris and the company's best-selling Camry. Though the previous-generation car did exorcise some of its econobox demons when it came to market in 2003, designers knew styling would be key to the Corolla fulfilling its new role.

Unfortunately, for a clean-sheet design, the new Corolla looks too much like the old model, and is nowhere near as brave as the Honda Civic and Mazda3 designs it will be squaring off against.

The Corolla is available only as a four-door sedan in five different trims: Standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS. The new body was drawn up with a lower profile and a sleeker look, featuring more angular A- and C-pillars. A wider track delivers improved aerodynamics and stability, and increases interior volume. The up-model S and XRS add sporty appeal with a more aggressive front bumper treatment, integrated fog lights, a lip spoiler, side skirts and an upgraded rear fascia.

The driveline-engineers also got to flex their muscles. The 2009 Corolla is offered with two powerplant possibilities: an all-new 132-horsepower 1.8-liter four cylinder, and a 158-horsepower four that displaces 2.4 liters. These engines are also available in the Matrix and various offerings from the Scion brand. In the Corolla, Standard, LE and XLE versions are powered by the 1.8-liter unit with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

The S and XRS trims back up their bark with the bigger 2.4-liter engine that can be coupled with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox, the latter a first in the Corolla lineup. The 2.4-liter is optional on S trims and standard on the XRS.

Creature Comforts
The quality of the interior materials and the car's overall fit and finish are excellent. The roomy interior features a highly configurable center console, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with optional audio controls, a 60/40 split-folding rear seating, an optional no-nonsense navigation system, an optional JBL sound system, a bright white gauge cluster and more storage possibilities than a bank vault.

On the safety front, the 2009 Corolla features six strategically placed airbags, and an innovative active front-seat head restraint system that provides additional whiplash protection. Other safety features include a tire-pressure-monitoring system, available traction control, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution, and "Brake Assist" for emergency situations.

On the Road
Behind the wheel, the new Corolla feels far more upscale than previous models. The driving position and outward visibility are immediately noticeable, although the standard seats are a bit flat. The sport seats in the XRS should be standard issue in all Corollas. Unless you only listen to AM talk radio, we highly recommended the optional JBL audio system. The functionality and the overall quietness of the cabin at speed put the Corolla at the top of its segment.

The new engines are excellent companions. The XRS was the most engaging model with its 158 horsepower, manual transmission and 17-inch low-profile tires. When pushed, the now two-inch wider front track and 2.9-inch wider rear track provide a more solid foundation and smoother transitions for sharp cornering. Steering feedback is adequate, and the XRS is responsive as long as the engine is kept in the wide portion of its powerband.

The sporty S and XRS models are not pocket rockets, but they are also far beyond the "basic transportation" umbrella that the Corolla has lived under much of its four decades on the road. The Corolla's five different trims ensure that penny pinchers yearning only for Toyota's reliability and fuel economy can choose a more pedestrian trim, while the more fashion conscious or power hungry can land a Corolla that makes a more opinionated statement.

Although Toyota has sold 30 million Corollas worldwide, the 2009 redesign is a critical juncture for the car because Toyota research indicates that one out of every three Corolla buyers moves up into another Toyota. This segment is heating up with plenty of quality, well-targeted products such as the Honda Civic, Mazda3 and the all-new Ford Focus.

Pricing is expected to remain in the same neighborhood as the outgoing model, and the all-new 2009 Corollas is scheduled to roll into showrooms on February 11, 2008.
