The Indian government has presented in parliament an inquiry into the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid mosque.

Parliament was in uproar on Monday with the main opposition BJP party reacting angrily to reports that its top leaders were implicated in the demolition.

Excerpts leaked from the inquiry report blamed senior BJP figures, including Atal Behari Vajpayee and LK Advani.

The mosque was brought down by a Hindu mob and some 2,000 people died in riots across India after its demolition.

The 900-page Liberhan commission report was submitted to the government in June but its contents were not made public.

Led by former high court judge MS Liberhan, the inquiry took 17 years to complete its work, at a cost of more than 65m rupees ($1.3m).

Scuffle

Home Minister P Chidambaram submitted the report in parliament at 12 noon (0630GMT).

A scuffle broke out in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of parliament) immediately after the report was presented.

Angry BJP lawmakers shouted slogans and many of them ran into the well of the House. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm.

Details about the commission's findings appeared in the Indian media on Monday.

The inquiry is believed to have said that the build-up to the demolition of the mosque had been meticulously planned and described BJP leaders as "pseudo-moderates".

The report apparently exonerated the Congress prime minister at the time, PV Narasimha Rao, of any responsibility - it said the federal government could not act in the absence of any recommendation from the state governor.

BJP leaders accused the Congress party-led government of "selective leaks" to distract attention from the economy and corruption - and demanded parliament see the report immediately.

Home Minister P Chidambaram denied his ministry was behind the "unfortunate" leak.

The site of the 16th Century Babri Masjid had been a focus for Hindu-Muslim hostility for decades. On 6 December 1992 a mob of Hindu militants tore the mosque down.

Rioters claimed the site had been a temple marking the birthplace of the Hindu God Ram.

The destruction of the mosque was one of the most divisive events in Indian history and led to Hindu-Muslim riots across the country in which more than 2,000 people were killed.

New Delhi, Nov 23 (PTI) Opposition BJP today stalled the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha over the leakage of the report of Libehran Commission that went into the Babri Masjid demolition leading to adjournment of the House till 12 noon.

As soon as the House met for the day, Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned that he has received a notice of suspension of Question Hour to discuss the issue of leakage of Liberhan Commission report.

Since the Business Advisory Committee of the House had already agreed for a short duration discussion on speedy trial of the case, Ansari said he would allow the Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley to explain why his notice should be admitted.

Vajpayee, Advani severely indicted by Liberhan Commission

New Delhi: AB Vajpayee and LK Advani head a list of 68 leaders of the Sangh Parivaar and bureaucrats held culpable by the Liberhan Commission for leading the country to the "brink of communal discord" over the Ayodhya issue.

In his nearly 1,000-page report, former Madras High Court chief justice MS Liberhan, who conducted an inquiry into the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya 17 years ago, has also indicted other senior BJP leaders Murli Manohar Joshi and then Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh and top brass of VHP like Giriraj Kishore and Ashok Singhal.

The commission has held that Vajpayee, Advani and Joshi, whom it calls "pseudo-moderate" leadership of the BJP, were party to the decisions of the Sangh Parivaar to demolish the 16th century structure in Ayodhya.

In a scathing indictment, the commission said these leaders cannot be given the benefit of the doubt and exonerated of culpability.

"They have violated the trust ofthe people.....There can be no greater betrayal or crime in a democracy and this commission has no hesitation in condemning there pseudo-moderates for their sins of omission", the report said.

OSLO: US President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for ``his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy
and cooperation between peoples,'' the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting US president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline.

Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

``Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future,'' the committee said. ``His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.''

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

``Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play,'' the committee said.

Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson won in 1919. Former President Jimmy Carter won the award in 2002, while former Vice President Al Gore shared the 2007 prize with the UN panel on climate change.

The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations for this year's prize.

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go ``to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.''

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, he said the peace prize should be given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Sweden and Norway were united under the same crown at the time of Nobel's death.

The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change.

All is set for one of the biggest missions for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) this year as it prepares on a mission to discover whether its earlier findings of water on the moon is true. Earlier, three different space probes have found the chemical signature of water all over the moon. Thus by bombing the South pole, NASA hopes to expose what it expects to be huge deposits of ice hidden beneath the surface. The LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite) mission will send a missile to blast a hole in the lunar surface near the moon's South pole. According to NASA, the impact will produce a
plume which an orbiting satellite will then analyze.

The Centaur rocket will strike first, transforming 2200 kg of mass and 10 billion joules of kinetic energy into a blinding flash of heat and light. Researchers expect the impact to throw up a plume of debris as high as 10 km.

Close behind, the LCROSS mothership will photograph the collision for NASA TV and then fly right through the debris plume. Onboard spectrometers will analyze the sunlit plume for signs of water (H2O), water fragments (OH), salts, clays, hydrated minerals and assorted organic molecules.

Anyone in these regions with at least a 10-inch (25.4-centimeter) telescope should be able to catch a glimpse of dusty debris—and maybe water vapor—billowing into the sunlight above the crater's rim, astronomers say.

Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors will launch a brand new improved version of Indigo christened Car as Tata Manza on October 14 2009 in Mumbai.

Manza Car is reportedly built on Indica Vista platform . This model will be powered by an engine which is sourced from Fiat and will be made available with two engine options -1.4L petrol engine and 1.3L multi-jet engine.

The new Indigo Manza will come with two engine variants – the 1.4 Litre 16 Valve DOHC petrol engine and the acclaimed 1.3 Multijet, both from the Fiat stable. The car will be a value for money offering and will come with a huge list of standard equipments like bluetooth enabled entertainment system with steering wheel mounted controls and centrally mounted MID (Multi Information Display) for the driver. The interiors would feature the conventional drive side mounted instrument console, unlike the Indica Vista.

The new Indigo Manza is expected to be priced starting at Rs 5.5 Lakhs for the base petrol to Rs 7.5 Lakhs for the top end diesel.

The 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three amazing scientists who elucidated the chemical bond-by-chemical bond action of the cell's protein synthesis organelle, the ribosome. Each of the three laureates employed three-dimensional, X-ray crystallographic structures and naturally-occurring antibiotics to dissect the mysteries of the ribosome, making tremendous advances in our knowledge on the least understood process of the central dogma of molecular biology: protein synthesis.

Yes, friends: this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry would not have been possible without the awesome power of natural products and the contributions of my natural products chemistry colleagues who provided Ramakrishnan, Steitz, and Yonath with the chemical tools for their work.

Literally dozens of these antibiotics are used clinically around the world and I guarantee that if you possess the relative wealth to have an internet connection to read this, you have taken at least one of these antibiotics.

Tetracycline? Check. Erythromycin or azithromycin? Check.

The scientific background on the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (PDF) is, as always, the best place for advanced students to start reading about the context of the scientific achievements of the three laureates. These are terrific, underappreciated, and meticulously constructed review articles, and this one by Måns Ehrenberg is no exception. Page 14, for example, provides a detailed list of the antibiotics that target the small and large ribosomal subunits of bacteria.

I was surprised - maybe not - that while I consider myself knowledgeable about transcriptional regulation, my understanding of the mechanics of protein synthesis is comparatively woeful. I suspect this reflects my own training by people who traced their scientific roots to the masters of DNA synthesis and the antimetabolites chemotherapeutics that target DNA and RNA synthesis. And while we've all used the natural product cycloheximide (from Streptomyces griseus) as a protein synthesis inhibitor in laboratory experiments, how many of us really know how it works.

I digress, but I wanted to give the general reader an idea that many of us who study the chemistry of biology have spent far more time tackling other areas than the one for which today's prize is awarded.

And for those who claim that today's prize isn't "really" about chemistry, let me provide this paragraph from p. 4 of the Nobel background narrative that sets these discoveries in context:

Long standing mysteries in ribosome function. From this brief account of ribosome function it follows that the ribosome catalyzes two chemical reaction steps involving covalent bonds: peptide bond formation and ester bond hydrolysis during termination. . .

. . .The chemical mechanisms of the covalent reaction steps carried out by the ribosome remained mysterious during decades of intense work on the bacterial ribosome by a large number of groups. How tRNAs and class-1 release factors manage to discriminate so precisely between their cognate and near-cognate codons in a ribosome dependent manner were other unanswered questions. Finally, how antibiotic drugs and ribosomal mutations can tune the accuracy of codon reading up or down have also remained obscure. The clarification of these and other central questions concerning normal ribosome function and how ribosome function is perturbed by the action of antibiotic drugs or mutations depended on the advent of crystal structures at high resolution of ribosomal subunits, the whole ribosome and important functional complexes of the ribosome, its subunits and, finally, of the 70S ribosome itself.

Let me close with this very serious issue because, after all, chemistry is life.

These discoveries have focused on mechanisms of basic cellular action - the distinctions between bacterial and eukaryotic ribosomal function have provided us with antibiotics that have arguably been the single greatest contribution to the increase in life expectancy that occurred in the 20th century. Unfortunately, bacteria evolve much faster than we do and antibiotic resistance is an increasingly life-threatening problem around the world, especially as drug-resistant strains previously restricted to hospitals are now acquired in the community.

Ehrenberg notes:

In the years after the Second World War, the wide spread introduction of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections revolutionized medicine and dramatically improved the health condition on a global scale. Now, 60 years later, the ever evolving antibiotic resistance among pathogens has heavily depleted the arsenal of effective antibiotic drugs. We seem to be running out of options, and a return to the pitiful health conditions preceding the Second World War has become an ominous scenario. About 90 000 patients in the USA die yearly as a result of bacterial infections compared to only about 13 000 twenty years ago, and in the majority of these casualties antibiotic resistance is an aggravating factor.

In recent years structure-based drug design (SBDD), where high resolution structures of drug targets and their resistance mutants are used to create novel drugs, has scored some promising successes, e.g. in the quest against HIV-virus infections. The ribosome is the target for about 50% of all antibacterial drugs to date, and the advent of high resolution structures of both ribosomal subunits has opened a large number of possibilities for SBDD of new and effective drugs in the race against resistance development among bacterial pathogens.

The meticulous dissection of ribosomal action by each of the laureates and their research teams has given us insight into the chemical mechanisms of action in protein synthesis, revealing the precise action of targets and how new compounds might be designed to overcome resistance. A number of us in so-called technologically-advanced nations have lost friends and loved ones to infectious diseases, even today.

The work of today's laureates is already influencing the discovery and design of novel antibiotics to combat drug-resistant bacteria and viral strains.

Heartiest to congratulations to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas Steitz, and Ada Yonath and, very importantly, their laboratory colleagues past and present.

Venkatraman "Venki" Ramakrishnan will travel from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, to deliver the next talk, entitled "Insights from the Structure of the 30S Ribosomal Subunit." Last year, Ramakrishnan, then at the University of Utah, led a group that determined this structure and published the work in Nature. In this paper, Ramakrishnan's group identified key portions of the RNA and, using previously determined structures, positioned all seven of the subunit's proteins. Most recently, he published two papers in the Sept. 21 issue of Nature that present the 3 Angstrom structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit and its complex with several antibiotics. These studies provide atomic-level insight into protein synthesis and the antibiotics that block it.

Everyone from brides and grooms to movie studio execs are celebrating the upcoming calendrical anomaly in their own way.

In Florida, at least one county clerk's office is offering a one-day wedding special for $99.99. The rarity of this Sept. 9 hasn't been lost on the creators of the iPod, who have moved their traditional Tuesday release day to Wednesday to take advantage of the special date. Focus Features is releasing their new film "9," an animated tale about the apocalypse, on the 9th.

Not only does the date look good in marketing promotions, but it also represents the last set of repeating, single-digit dates that we'll see for almost a century (until January 1, 2101), or a millennium (mark your calendars for January 1, 3001), depending on how you want to count it.

Though technically there's nothing special about the symmetrical date, some concerned with the history and meaning of numbers ascribe powerful significance to 09/09/09.

For cultures in which the number nine is lucky, Sept. 9 is anticipated - while others might see the date as an ominous warning.

Math magic

Modern numerologists - who operate outside the realm of real science - believe that mystical significance or vibrations can be assigned to each numeral one through nine, and different combinations of the digits produce tangible results in life depending on their application.

As the final numeral, the number nine holds special rank. It is associated with forgiveness, compassion and success on the positive side as well as arrogance and self-righteousness on the negative, according to numerologists.

Though usually discredited as bogus, numerologists do have a famous predecessor to look to. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician and father of the famous theorem, is also credited with popularizing numerology in ancient times.

"Pythagoras most of all seems to have honored and advanced the study concerned with numbers, having taken it away from the use of merchants and likening all things to numbers," wrote Aristoxenus, an ancient Greek historian, in the 4th century B.C.

As part of his obsession with numbers both mathematically and divine, and like many mathematicians before and since, Pythagoras noted that nine in particular had many unique properties.

Any grade-schooler could tell you, for example, that the sum of the two-digits resulting from nine multiplied by any other single-digit number will equal nine. So 9x3=27, and 2+7=9.

Multiply nine by any two, three or four-digit number and the sums of those will also break down to nine. For example: 9x62 = 558; 5+5+8=18; 1+8=9.

Sept. 9 also happens to be the 252nd day of the year (2 + 5 +2)...

Loving 9

Both China and Japan have strong feelings about the number nine. Those feelings just happen to be on opposite ends of the spectrum.

The Chinese pulled out all the stops to celebrate their lucky number eight during last year's Summer Olympics, ringing the games in at 8 p.m. on 08/08/08. What many might not realize is that nine comes in second on their list of auspicious digits and is associated with long life, due to how similar its pronunciation is to the local word for long-lasting (eight sounds like wealth).

Historically, ancient Chinese emperors associated themselves closely with the number nine, which appeared prominently in architecture and royal dress, often in the form of nine fearsome dragons. The imperial dynasties were so convinced of the power of the number nine that the palace complex at Beijing's Forbidden City is rumored to have been built with 9,999 rooms.

Japanese emperors would have never worn a robe with nine dragons, however.

In Japanese, the word for nine is a homophone for the word for suffering, so the number is considered highly unlucky - second only to four, which sounds like death.

Many Japanese will go so far as to avoid room numbers including nine at hotels or hospitals, if the building planners haven't already eliminated them altogether.

The National Film Awards for 2007 were announced on Monday. It is neither Shah Rukh Khan nor Aamir Khan but Tamil actor Prakash Raaj who
has won the best actor award for 2007 for his performance in Tamil film "Kanchivaram".

Raaj had earlier won the best supporting actor award for his film "Iruvar" in 1998 and a special jury award in 2003.

Umashree got the best actress award for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli's Kannada film "Gulabi Talkies".

"Kanchivaram" has also been chosen as the best film for 2007. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film depicts the lives and times of silk-weavers of Kancheepuram in pre-Independent India.

Renowned Malayalam director has been adjudged best director for "Naalu Pennungal".

The best child actor award went to Sharad Goyekar for his role in the Marathi film "Tingya".

Darshan Zariwala got the best supporting actor award for his role in "Gandhi My Father". Feroz Abbas Khan, the director of the film, bagged the National Award for best screenplay. There was also a special jury award for this film, which explores the troubled relationship between Harilal Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi.

"Chak De India" bagged the award in the wholesome entertainment category and "Taare Zameen Par" in the family welfare category.

Lyricist Prasoon Joshi got the award for the best lyrics for "Maa" from "Taare Zameen Par". The song also got Shankar Mahadevan the National Award for best playback singer.

The jury was headed by Sai Paranjpe; other members included Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale. About 102 films and 106 non-feature films were considered.

The list had been finalized last week but because of the death of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YSR Reddy, the announcement was postponed.

Earthquake hits Chennai and Andaman -11 August 2009

Chennai (11 August 2009): A great intensity earthquake of 7.6 magnitude on Richter scale struck off the Andaman and Nicobar islands today, Indian Meteorological Department said.

However, no casualty has been reported so far.

The quake hit the island at 01:26 AM about 265 kms north of Port Blair city, the IMD said.

I was attending a meeting at around 5.00 pm today at my office at Rajaji Salai aka North Beach Road opposite Beach Station. Captain Manoharan from the Security Department entered the Conference Hall and asked us to vacate the Building.

As I proceeded out of the office, I came to know that tremors rocked the building and top floors experienced the tremors. Poople in the top floors who experienced the tremors were disturbed. While I was proceeding to the Beach Station, I learnt that the nearby Collector Office also experienced tremors and the staff were asked to vacate the building. When I called home, my wife said that the news tickers in TV informed that Nungambakkam and Koyambedu area experienced tremors.

"An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale shook the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Chennai today triggering panic among residents.

With its epicentre near Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the quake occurring at around 1700 hrs lasted a few seconds and rocked several parts of Chennai including the busy T Nagar, Nugambakkam and Koyambedu areas, Met office sources and the police told PTI.

Employees working in a multi-storeyed building in Venkatnarayana Road in T Nagar rushed out of office as they experienced the tremor, police said.

However, there is no immediate report about any loss of life or property due to the quake."

The path of totality

At sunrise on July 22, 2009, (the evening of July 21 PDT), the moon’s umbra—the cone-shaped part of the moon’s shadow—will fall on India’s Gulf of Khambhat. The shadow will sweep across Asia and the South Pacific before leaving the earth near the Marshall Islands about 3½ hours later. The path of totality will cover a distance of approximately 9,500 miles (15,200 km). The maximum duration of totality is an exceptionally long 6 minutes and 39 seconds, which will come while the shadow is over the Pacific.

Railway Budget to focus on better passenger amenities today

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to present the Railway Budget at 12 pm in Parliament today amid much speculation. Banerjee's previous stint saw finances in a mess and she must be careful not to reverse Lalu Prasad Yadav's smart ways of raising passenger revenue and should not let the Railways slip into departmentalism.

CNBC-TV18’s Economic Policy Editor Vivian Fernandes reports that the Railway Minister is likely to focus on better passenger amenities like sanitation and hygienic food, issues that were ignored by her predecessor. She may also promise quick completion of the East-West dedicated freight corridor and the extension of the Western corridor from Sonnagar to Dankuni.

Mamata Banerjee has said that passenger amenities are going to be the focus and so one could expect emphasize on cleanliness, hygienic food aspects which were ignored by predecessor Lalu Prasad Yadav with his drive for profits.

She said that the East-West dedicated freight corridor is gong to be completed expeditiously. One can expect her to announce an extension of the Eastern corridor that currently terminates at Sonnagar on the Bihar West Bengal Border to Dankuni near Kolkata,

Mamata Banerjee might be in Railway Bhavan but her eyes are set on righteous building Chief Ministership of West Bengal and Lalu Yadav has shown it is possible to cater to ones political constituency without hurting the railways and Mamata Banerjee can do likewise if she does not reverse some of the smart but not so face forward decisions taken by Lalu Prasad Yadav to enhance passenger revenues.

She will also have to show leadership and she will have to make sure that the railways do not slip in to departmentalism and that the stretched targets set by Lalu are maintained. Already the railways have scaled back the 910 million tonne set by Lalu in the Interim Budget for freight loading to 875 million tonnes. In her previous stint as Railway Minister in October 1999 and March 2001, Mamata Banerjee left railway finances in a mess. Fully Rs 98 out of every Rs 100 earned, went into expenses despite unpaid interest on government’s preference capital; it was the worst operating ratio since 1951. This time one expects Mamata Bangerjee to do better.

As everyone has undoubtedly heard by now, Michael Jackson died today, June 25, 2009. He was rushed to the hospital after collapsing in his rented Holmby Hills mansion around 12:20 p.m. Pacific Time. While rumors and speculation swirled around his condition, the predominant rumor was that he had died of a heart attack. His brother, Jermaine Jackson, made the announcement of his death came about 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

At the height of his career, Michael Jackson was the most successful music star in the world. However, in recent years, his music had taken a back seat to his eccentricities and accusations of child molestation. He became more reclusive as time went by. He is reported to have been approximately $500 million in debt at the time of his death. His annual income was approximately $19 million per year from royalties and is said to have been worth approximately $1 Billion in assets. He was planning a comeback of sorts, scheduling a tour in the United Kingdom. Some suggest that the stress of his already frail physical condition, his debts and attempting to prepare for this comeback tour probably contributed to his death. There is also speculation that he might have been over medicated and that might have been a contributing factor to his death.

All of these questions will hopefully be answered when the investigation and autopsy are completed. Jackson’s body was flown from the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, to the L.A. County Coroner’s Office late this afternoon. LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop" who once moonwalked above the music world, died Thursday as he prepared for a comeback bid to vanquish nightmare years of sexual scandal and financial calamity. He was 50.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.

"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said. Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album "Thriller" _ which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" _ is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

At the time of his death, Jackson was rehearsing hard for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13.

As word of his death spread, MTV switched its programming to play videos from Jackson's heyday. Radio stations began playing marathons of his hits. Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital. In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend had sent him. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."

Transformers revenge of the fallen review

I love that they're called "Decepticons." Like The Core dubbing the ultra-rare element that can slice through diamonds "unobtainium," naming villainous robots "Decepticons" is a lovely bit of Saturday-morning-cartoon kitsch -- virtually perfect for a story about an alien race of "autobots" that transform back-and-forth between 200-foot-tall metal warriors and, for some reason, Earth cars. And it is practically begging for a brisk, breezy, candy-colored treat of a movie -- a summer flick that embraces the silliness, runs with it, makes us smile.

At the risk of stating the obvious, Michael Bay is not the person to deliver such a movie. He wasn't the right person in 2007 when the original Transformers was released, and he's not the right person today. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is loud, lumbering and long, entirely unconcerned with telling a story or doing anything other than sustaining a din of metal clangs and explosions. I gather it's supposed to be "fun" -- "check your brain at the door," I keep hearing -- but if so it has the most warped conception of fun since Caligula.

Bay is vilified as the baron of mindless big-budget action, but of course "big-budget" is not the problem. "Mindless" is closer. He is the unchecked id of Hollywood filmmaking, let loose with hundreds of millions of dollars to make things 'splode, but untempered by any conception of pacing, suspense or tension -- you know, the things that make action movies enjoyable. The term "mind-numbing" was invented for him, and you haven't seen "mind-numbing" until you've seen Revenge of the Fallen.

I gather this franchise is a nostalgia trip for many people my age, and if that's all you seek, you may not be disappointed (though you could probably just as easily leave after thirty minutes). Revenge of the Fallen features all the Decepticon-on-Autobot action you could ask for. There's even some sort of super-Decepticon -- an ancient evil robot (though not, as best as I could tell, an actual Transformer) who wants to activate a machine buried in the Earth that would destroy the sun. Why? I think it has something to do with mining it for energy, though no one else seems particularly eager to do so. Somehow or other, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and his hot girlfriend from the first movie (Megan Fox, whose hotness is mentioned at every opportunity) get involved and start roaming the globe looking for a way to stop the Decepticons. After a while, the movie turns into a sustained action set piece, and the significance of any particular explosion or robot smackdown becomes difficult to pin down.

Revenge of the Fallen is two-and-a-half hours of top-shelf special effects deployed indiscriminately; a roaring, plotless, character-less mess that sees mainstream moviegoers as money-spending, barely sentient automatons. I want to emphasize the two and a half hours, because that running time seems downright criminal. It filled me with despair. At some point -- probably around 100 minutes in, though I didn't have a watch -- I became convinced that the movie would never end. It's not just that it felt long (though did it ever) but that there seemed to be no reason why it could not go on forever. Without a narrative shape, any specific ending point could only be arbitrary.

A few things did jump out at me from the miasma of fireballs and noise. The movie is casually racist in a rather appalling way -- among other things, there's a duo of jive-talking "black" autobots who, the movie helpfully points out, "don't read much." I agree that Megan Fox is attractive, but Bay absolutely leers at her with his camera in a way that started to make me uncomfortable. And Bay's self-regard scales new heights, as a poster for Bad Boys II is prominently displayed on the wall of Sam's dorm and fills the screen on more than one occasion. As if any self-respecting college student would hang an enormous Bad Boys II poster in his room.

But what's most offensive about Revenge of the Fallen is the boredom -- awful, escalating boredom that transcended mere indifference, and even annoyance. Critics blithely refer to movies as "painful" all the time, but this is the real deal. I see how Transformers could be charming, but in the hands of Michael Bay it is -- as much as any movie could ever be, I think -- torture.

Prakash in Wimbledon qualifiers' final round

London: India's Prakash Amritraj moved into the final round of Wimbledon qualifiers with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Britain's Daniel Cox.

Prakash, ranked 154, came up with a superb serve and volley game as he pinned down Cox, an aggressive baseliner.

"The conditions were ideal," Prakash said. "I was focussed from the start, though I let him back in the match."

The 18-year-old Cox admitted he was taught a harsh lesson on grass.

"I'm a bit disappointed to be honest - I was a bit too passive with my game," said Cox. "I did not really put him under any pressure and I did not really feel good about my shots."

"I was hitting and missing - either I was playing well and hitting some good shots or I was really bad and I couldn't really get the balance right.

"I was looking to play the perfect game and that's not what the big players do. The top people do the basics really well and I need to learn that," said the 627-ranked player.

Prakash next plays 28-year-old American Michael Yani who beat Japanese Go Soeda 6-2, 7-6 (5). The two have played each other once before, at the Dallas Challenger earlier this year where Prakash beat Yani in straight sets.

This is Prakash's best performance here.

In his three attempts to qualify for Wimbledon, he has never made it past the second round.

His famous father Vijay Amritraj made his last appearance here 28 years ago in the quarter-finals.

In the men's qualifying doubles, India's Somdev Devvarman and his South African partner Kevin Anderson upset eighth-seeded Ukranians Sergei Bubka and Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

They next play Italian Alessandro Motti and Australian Joseph Sirianni, who took out third-seeded Russian pair Michail Elgin and Alexandre Kudryavtsev 6-1, 7-6(6).

New Delhi: Italian car major Fiat on Wednesday launched its much-awaited premium small car Grande Punto in both petrol and diesel variants in the Indian market, priced between Rs 3.99 lakh and Rs 6.11 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The launch of Grande Punto marks a new milestone for Fiat in India as we bring the quintessentially Italian designs to Indian shores,' Fiat India Automobiles Ltd (FIAL) Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Kapoor told reporters here.

The company believes that the small-car segment is under-tapped and customers are increasingly looking forward to international brands on Indian roads, he added.

Grande Punto, which was first launched in the European market in 2005, would be rolled out from the company's plant at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra in four variants each in both petrol (1.2 litre an 1.4 litre) and diesel modes (1.3 litre).

The petrol variants would cost Rs 3.99-5.61 lakh, while the diesel cars would be offered at Rs 4.85-6.11 lakh.

FIAL, a 50:50 joint venture between Italy-based Fiat SpA and domestic auto major Tata Motors, plans to position the car in the premium hatchback segment along with Maruti Suzuki's Ritz, Hyundai's i20, Skoda's Fabia and Honda Siel's Jazz.

The company said Grande Punto would be retailed through over 100 Tata-Fiat dealers network across the country.

The company's Ranjangaon facility has a production capacity of two lakh cars and three lakh engines per annum. It produces Palio Stile and Linea from the plant.

BJP candidate and former union minister Harin Pathak won the Ahmedabad (East) constituency by a margin of 86065 votes beating his Congress rival Dipak Babaria.

Congress candidate Soma Patel won the Surendranagar seat by defeating his BJP rival Lalji Mer by 3916 votes.

Congress candidates Ajay Maken and J P Agarwal Saturday won from the New Delhi and northeast Delhi Lok Sabha constituencies, respectively. Maken, union minister of state for Urban Development, defeated his rival Vijay Goel of Bharatiya Janata Party by 187,629 votes in New Delhi constituency. Delhi Congress chief Agarwal defeated BJP candidate B L Sharma Prem by 222,243 votes.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader and five-time MP Maneka Gandhi won from the Aonla Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has won from Kolkata South by a margin of over 2.21 lakh votes, defeating her nearest CPI-M candidate Robin Deb.

Telugu superstar and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) president K Chiranjeevi lost the assembly elections from Palacole in West Godavari district in coastal Andhra to B. Usha Rani of the Congress by over 5,000 votes. However, he won the Tirupati seat in Chittoor district in Rayalaseema region. He defeated B. Karunakar Reddy of the Congress by over 10,800 votes.

AP Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was re-elected to the assembly from Pulivendula constituency with a majority of 69,092 votes.

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu retained the Kuppam assembly seat in his native Chittoor district, defeating Congress' M Subramanyam Reddy by a margin of 46,000 votes.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad won the Saran seat beating Bharatiya Janata Party heavyweight Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Congress Party wins India elections 2009

India’s ruling Congress party (INC) has won more than 191 of the 543 parliamentary seats up for grab in the 2009 India elections, beating out the main opposition bloc led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

While short of a majority, the result means incumbent prime minister, Dr. Mammohan Singh, will form the 18th Indian government since elections were first held in the world’s second most populated country in 1947.

With more than 70 percent of the votes counted, the Congress party-led coalition of Dr. Singh could end up with more than 240 of the lower house seats.

India is the most populous democracy in the world and more than 714 million of its 1.2 billion population were eligible to vote in the five-stage election process that ended on May 13.

Deputy Election Commissioner, R. Balakrishnan from the national election commission said voter turnout was approximately 60 percent, for the marathon process that took one month to complete.

According to the constitution, a new parliament has to be in place by June 2 and Prime Minister Singh today called a cabinet meeting for Monday ahead of what will be his second five-year term. In being reelected to the country’s top post Dr. Singh becomes only the second prime minister in the country’s history to win back-to-back parliamentary elections. The first to do so was India’s first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.

Lucknow: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and five-time MP Maneka Gandhi won from the Aonla Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh Saturday, senior Election Commission officials said here.
Due to a mistake in the tabulation of votes, Maneka Gandhi had earlier been reported to have lost by about 22,000 votes, one official said.
It was finally found that she had won by about 6,400 votes.

Chennai: Many of the Congress' top leaders were trailing in Tamil Nadu though its alliance with the DMK and the VCK had won eight seats and was leading on eighteen. The rival AIADMK front that includes the Left parties, MDMK and PMK was ahead in 12.

Prominent winners from the DMK were Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagiri from Madurai and filmstar J K Riteesh from Ramanathapuram. Among other DMK candidates, former communications minister and media baron Dayanidhi Maran, and central ministers
S S Palanimanickam, A Raja and T R Baalu were also leading.

The DMK and the Congress had won four seats each, while the AIADMK and the MDMK had won one each, as per the results declared by 3.30 pm.

Home Minister P Chidambaram was finding the going tough in Sivaganga constituency and had demanded a recount after the returning officer declared the AIADMK's Raja Kannappan as a victor with a margin of around 3,000 votes.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's ruling coalition won an overwhelming election victory on Saturday, boosting hopes of a stable government as the emerging Asian power faces economic downturn and tensions with Pakistan.

Singh's Congress-led coalition, riding on the back of years of economic growth, did better than expected and will probably be only just short of an outright majority, according to data from the election commission and projections by TV channels.

The victory over the opposition Hindu-nationalist-led alliance means the left-of-centre Congress may find it easier to form a stable coalition with smaller parties and be less vulnerable to pressure on issues like economic reforms

"Eventually the people of India know what's good for them and they always make the right choice," Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress party, told reporters outside her home in New Delhi.

Congress party supporters, their arms in the air and carrying banners of star campaigners Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, set off firecrackers in celebration on the party's return to power.

The Congress party-led coalition was projected to win 261 seats, short of the 272 needed for a parliamentary majority, state TV said. Full results are expected later on Saturday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led opposition alliance would take 160 seats and a Third Front of communist and smaller groups 58 seats, the TV channel said.

The BJP effectively conceded defeat by saying that Congress had the biggest mandate.

Singh, 76, said he wanted a cabinet role for Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the Gandhi-Nehru dynasty and who is seen as having orchestrated the Congress party's resurgence in northern states.

"It is my wish that he should be in the cabinet. But I will have to persuade him," Singh said.

The results should boost investor confidence and hopes for reforms. Markets had been jittery over a poor showing by either national alliance, fearing the emergence of a weak coalition.

"This is a dream for the market. You could not have thought of anything better than this. Get ready for a 7-8 percent rally in the stock market on Monday," Samir Arora, a fund manager at Helios Capital management in Singapore.

About 714 million people were eligible to vote in the largest such exercise in the world staggered over a month to allow security forces to supervise the vote.

ECONOMY, GANDHI

India's booming economic growth for the past four years, including rising rural incomes, may well have worked for the Congress-led coalition headed by the reformist Singh.

A severe financial downturn that began last year and is continuing in Asia's third largest economy appeared to have had little impact on the fortunes of the ruling alliance.

"It seems to me that we must acknowledge the economy," said political analyst Mahesh Rangarajan. "Despite the slowdown in the economy in the last year, these four or five years have been among the best in India's recorded economic history."

A tireless campaign by Rahul Gandhi was also was a factor in the election, Congress supporters said.

"We want Rahul Gandhi to be the prime minister as soon as possible, he is a great leader and we all love him." said Vandana, a student supporter.

The election was a setback for regional, caste-based parties and the communists who were once seen as indispensable for any coalition formation.

The communists, who were trailing in their bastion states, broke away from Singh's coalition last year, angry over a civilian nuclear energy deal with Washington seen as undermining national sovereignty.

Mayawati, the controversial chief minister of Uttar Pradesh who was tipped as a possible kingmaker, did not make significant electoral gains to wield influence in a possible coalition.

Sivaganga, May 16 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has lost the elections in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga parliamentary constituency to his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) rival Raja Kannappan.

According to sources, a repoll has been ordered in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shatrughan Sinha has won the Patna seat, beating his rival and television actor Shekhar Suman of Congress.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief and Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has lost against the Janata Dal-United’s (JD-U) Ram Sundar Das in Bihar’s Hajipur parliamentary constituency.

BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has won the Amritsar seat, beating O. P. Soni of the Congress.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Jaya Prada has won the Rampur seat, while Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda beat his nearest rival Nafe Singh Rathi of INLD by over four lakh votes in the Rohtak constituency. (ANI)

Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi has won his maiden election from Tirupati Assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

Chiranjeevi beat his Congress rival and former chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams B Karunakar Reddy by a margin of over 10,500 votes, official sources said.

He is, however, still trailing in Palakollu, the second constituency he is contesting from in his native West Godavari district.

NEW DELHI: Congress on Saturday made it clear that Manmohan Singh will lead a government led by the party as promised during the campaign,
scotching speculation on its prime ministerial candidate.

Addressing the press at 10, Janpath in New Delhi, party president Sonia Gandhi said that Manmohan Singh remains the party’s choice for heading the next government. She said the verdict reflects the wisdom of the Indian voter, who “always make the right choice.”

PM Manmohan Singh said he would try to persuade Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Gandhi family, to join the cabinet after the ruling Congress-led coalition's win in a general election.

"It is my wish that he should be in the cabinet. But I will have to persuade him," Singh told reporters.

Earlier, AICC media department incharge Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters here when asked who will lead a Congress-led government at the Centre: "Manmohan Singh is our PM candidate and he will become Prime Minister.

On projection of Rahul Gandhi as a candidate for the prime minister's post, Dwivedi said. "the PM's chair is Rahul's future and he is the future leader of the party.

"It depends on Rahul when he will desire and when such a situation will arise. But as of now, Rahul has other priorities," he said.

He also gave full credit to the 39-year-old scion of Nehru-Gandhi family for the party's unexpectedly good performance in Uttar Pradesh.

"It is just the beginning", he said and predicted the end of communal and castist parties in the future.

With the Left parties suffering a setback in their bastion West Bengal, the Congress hoped that they "will introspect whom they will remain with" and play a "different" role.

Rahul has all 'qualities and capabilities' to be PM: Scindia

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today said Rahul Gandhi should be the Prime Minister as he has all the "qualities and capabilities".

"I am not undermining anyone but I am saying that Rahul Gandhiji should be Prime minister. He has all the qualities and capabilities...he has actually shown that in this election...," he said.

When asked whether Manmohan Singh should resign and Rahul become PM, he said: "I never said that. I said that it is not the aspirations of the Congress party alone, aspirations not only of the youth of the country but all people of the country that he should get to the helm."

He said his maturity, his farsightedness and his political astuteness that he has shown in the last five years was exemplary. "That is the kind of leadership that this country was searching for."

Making it clear that it was his personal opinion, Scindia said: "Manmohan Singhji is the prime ministerial candidate of the Congress party and absolutely once again will be the prime minster of the country. You asked for my personal opinion and I gave you my personal opinion."

Advani wins Gandhinagar by over 100,000 votes

Gandhinagar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani won the Gandhinagar seat by over 100,000 votes, almost half his 2004 victory margin of 217,138 votes.

The BJP leader, who contested the Lok Sabha polls for the fifth consecutive time, found his victory margin reduced due to the delimitation exercise in the Gandhinagar constituency that brought down the number of voters.

After four rounds of voting, he was ahead of his nearest Congress rival Suresh Patel by 106,963 votes.

Advani has contested from Gandhinagar in 1991, 1998, 1999 and 2004 and now in 2009.

Party supporters were planning to take out a victory rally in Gandhinagar later Saturday.

Lalu Prasad wins one, loses another

Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad has tasted victory and defeat in the same breath Saturday - winning one Lok Sabha seat and losing another one.

Lalu Prasad won the Saran seat beating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavyweight Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

However, the railways minister in the outgoing government lost the Pataliputra seat to Ranjan Prasad Yadav of the ruling Janata Dal-United.

Sarvvam is a thriller with Arya and Trisha in lead roles. The story travels around five important characters; Karthik (Arya), a civil engineer, Sandhya (Trisha) a psychiatrist and their sweet romance, Noushad (Inderjit) and his young son Iman (Rohan) and Eswar (J.D. Chakravarthy) who pursues them.

Swine flu: Symptoms and infection rate soar, but virus less dangerous

Health experts are bracing for a global epidemic of swine flu, but reassure that it is expected to be less lethal than the avian flu that swept through the world in the past four years (the last victim was reported earlier this week in Egypt). Swine flu victims exhibit similar symptoms to patients infected with the avian flu (or bird flu), and the transmission of the swine flu is wider compared to the avian flu. However, health professionals claim that it results in death in far fewer of cases.

Swine flu symptoms include high fever, body aches, headaches, coughing, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and chills. The disease is transmitted directly between people, and not through animals, making it highly contagious. A single cough of an infected person can transmit the sickness to an entire room full of people

Since the first case of swine flue was detected by Mexican laboratories in March 18, hundreds of thousands of people exposed to the strain have travelled from Mexico to other parts of the world, and it is expected that new cases will be reported at any minute from countries all over the globe.

Nevertheless, authorities warn that the swine flu should not create the global panic which has been felt in the past week. This is due to the fact that it is far less dangerous to patients, and also to the fact that simple precautions can protect from the swine flu: simply staying away from people already infected and breathing through a simple filter such as cloth can defend against most chances of infection.

In addition, an effective medication already exists to treat victims - experts around the world have already concluded that Tamiflu drug should be used to treat the new strain, and will be an efficient countermeasure. It takes about 24 hours to detect the virus called H1N1.

As of today, health authorities in Mexico confirmed that over 150 people died of the swine flu. In Texas and California, where the virus has also been found, the patients were fully recovered. This difference highlights the key factor needed to effectively combat the swine flu – advanced medical services infrastructure. Many specialists claim that the Mexicans are now paying the price of low investment in their public health sector

Chennai/Patna: At least seven people were killed and 20 injured when a local passenger train collided with a goods train in a Chennai suburb Wednesday, an official said. In Patna, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said that an inquiry will be conducted into the collision.

A local passenger train collided with a goods train in Chennai's northern Vyasarpadi suburb Wednesday morning. 'The accident occurred a little before 6 a.m. A passenger train collided with a goods train comprising several oil tanks. The identities of the motormen who operated the two trains are being sought,' a Southern Railway spokesperson said.

He added that the injured were admitted to the General Hospital in this Tamil Nadu capital. The deceased were yet to be identified. 'We will conduct an inquiry into the train accident in Tamil Nadu,' Lalu Prasad told reporters in Patna.

'We heard a loud noise and then saw several railway compartments in flames. The smell emanating from bodies retrieved from the mangled coaches was nauseating,' said M.N. Selvi, who lives near the Vyasarpadi railway station.

All local and long distance trains coming from Arakkonam (over 30 km north of Chennai) towards Chennai Central were stopped enroute, the railway official said, adding that normal services would resume by about 3 p.m.

'I'm going to miss my important meeting for negotiating a letter of credit worth Rs.110 million and tying up supplies,' N S Veeraraghavan, an executive stranded at Perambur, said. The family of S.K. Vimalanathan, who was scheduled to be married on Wednesday, was stuck at Pattathiram.

'Forcing my aged parents and relatives to alight on the tracks with luggage is out of question. We will have to delay the entry into the marriage hall beyond 3 pm, when the next auspicious hour begins,' said S Krishnamurthy, the groom's father.

The third-generation Shuffle, a slim aluminum rectangle less than 2 inches long, takes up about half as much space as the previous version even as it doubles music storage space to 4 gigabytes. To achieve such a tiny form, Apple had to remove most of the buttons from the body of the $79 device and build them into the headphone cord instead.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) will declare its new schedule for Twenty20 cricket matches, after submitting it to the home ministry.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has sent a revised schedule for Twenty20 cricket matches to the Home Ministry.

According to the sources, the ministry has forwarded the schedule to state DGs for assessment and approval.

The exercise is aimed at providing foolproof security for the matches, originally scheduled to be played between April 10 and May 24 and spread over eight States.

As the IPL programme coincides with the Lok Sabha elections, there was concern over security to the players as well as at the venues.

Following is the IPL schedule for season 2 :-
